If you’re going to college you still won’t really have them for a while - don’t worry.

If you were like me and you just coasted through high school without ever studying or doing homework, don’t even THINK that will work at college. I can’t stress that enough. You might do stuff in class, but 90% of it isn’t graded. Your homework is the only thing that matters, aside from finals.

The seniors at my school officially graduated May 27. You’re late to the party!

On a side note, I do start school this year on August 1, though.

You can add me to the list of people who got their ass kicked freshman year and had to learn how to study all of a sudden.

That makes 3...hopefully he listens to us

Replace “flying” with whatever suits the moment and this just works, almost every time.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

When you are flying, everything is either all right or it is not all right. If it is all right there is no need to worry. If it is not all right one of two things will happen. Either you will crash or you will not crash.
If you do not crash there is no need to worry. If you do crash one of two things is certain. Either you will be injured or you will not be injured.
If you are not injured there is no need to worry. If you are injured one of two things is certain. Either you will recover or you will not recover.
If you recover there is no need to worry. If you don’t recover you can’t worry.

As a follow-up to my other post, though, don’t be scared of college. It’s gonna be stressful at first, but it’s easily going to be the best few years of your life. Can I ask if you already know where you’re going? (And if you’re not going to college, that’s a perfectly okay choice as well. College is essential to pursue certain careers, but you can still have a meaningful and successful life without it. You’ll just have somewhat limited options that way.)

Also, there’s nothing wrong with being undecided and attending community college first and planning to get an associate degree as you decide what you will major towards in the future when transferring to a four year university.

I was undecided for a long time, completed my associate degree at community college, and just as I was looking to transfer to a university to pursue Computer Information Systems, I found my community college offering Cisco networking courses and decided to sign up and see if I’d like it better.

Now I know I want to be a network engineer. Currently in the process to studying for Cisco certifications! I’m even putting off going to university so I can get a career in the field asap.

Same thing happened to me, then my second semester at Georgia Tech I got a 0.75 GPA, you needed a 1.8 GPA to stay in as a sophomore, and that’s exactly what I had. It took me a long time to actually figure out how to study, unfortunately it took a kick in the ass for me to start. I did graduate in 4.5 years with a job, so I guess I eventually did something right.

I’m actually taking an indefinite break from school. 1st semester, I had I think a 0.3 GPA. I saw a psychiatrist over winter break, though, and we determined that my previously diagnosed anxiety and depression was severely underestimated, so I got my dosages increased and Georgia Southern actually let me retroactively withdraw from everything I failed. (usually that’s reserved for extreme situations, like a student being unable to withdraw in time after slipping into a coma or something. I think I was the first in the school’s history to be given that option for mental health issues. So that was pretty amazing.)

But anyway, the second semester wasn’t any better for me, due in part to one professor in particular. Since my GPA was so low, I had to take a course that was supposedly about studying techniques. But this asshole lady decided to use it as an hour of weekly ridicule; the entire class consisted of sitting quietly while she tried to guilt everyone for partying and drinking too much instead of going to class, never realizing that at least one of us spent the majority of the previous semester hiding in the dorms, being driven to tears every day after checking their emails from professors and truly not knowing why they couldn’t bring themselves to go to class. I even told her one time that I had never been to any parties or anything, But she didn’t let up at all.

But yeah, this is a sore subject for me. I want to go back and finish more than anything in the world, but I’m just not ready to face the possibility that it will end up the same way again.

But I really don’t want my personal experience to worry the OP up there. Just remember that if you have any disabilities or disorders, there are tons of resources available. Use them as often as you can. That’s what I should have done in the first place.

This was my second semester, I made this picture a long time ago for the something, I think drop day and sent it out to my fraternity. Everyone knew I got a 0.75 and it’s not like I really cared, it happened, I failed out, came back and am still a ChemE.

Kinja'd!!!

I actually had a fraternity brother, who was also a roommate during my third year of Tech, do the same exact thing for similar reasons. His case was a lot more sketchy, and more detail than I’d like to go into on oppo, there might have also been some prescription drug addiction there. However, I understand that and it’s there so you don’t fuck yourself for the rest of your life.

I don’t understand why people who are supposed to be helping you try to admonish you for things that you may or may not have done. Drinking is my vice, I like to drink, but did I let it get in the way of my studies, no. I just flat out sucked at studying, and I would get super stressed at times cause I failed out once and couldn’t do it again, and then couldn’t focus cause I was so stressed. My former next door neighbor back in Roswell failed out of Georgia Southern cause he was playing WOW all day. Georgia Southern is also considered a party school, so that’s probably why your teacher didn’t believe you. My sister went there so I’m not trying to speak ill of there. Regardless she should have been trying regardless why you were there.

I’d suggest you try and go back, once you figure out why you couldn’t bring yourself to go to class. Otherwise you might have the same problem. Maybe just take one class, pass it and it’ll build your confidence. I may be unemployed right now, but a college degree in a good field is worth it. Just need to find someone who wants to hire a ChemE with some oil field experience. I also wish I’d taken advantage of resources, might have been able to get a job out of college that I didn’t hate.

Work hard to be the best you that you can be....not merely for your sake, but for everyone else around you. People often confuse citizenship and community with patriotism or arrogance. Citizenship and community are simply terms that convey that we’re all in this, but we’re in it together, and if you need help that I can provide, then I will provide it.

Yesterday, an overweight 67 year-old man lost his footing while disembarking the USCGC Taney in Chesapeake Bay, falling completely off balance, and crashing to the pavement, landing on his chin. I was still on-board the ship while the old man was sprawled out on the brick sidewalk, no longer moving. I ran as fast as I could to get to the gangplank and on to the shore. Well before I got there, an onshore passerby had run to him and the ship’s volunteer was running for a first aid kit. By the time I got there, the passerby had ascertained that my father was conscious, responsive, but bleeding profusely from his wounded lip and chin. Once the first aid kit arrived, both people helped me administer first aid to my father, both stayed with him while I ran to the garage to get a vehicle, and one gave us directions to the nearest medical clinic (he would eventually need five stitches in his chin) while the other gave my dad his shirt to wear after we got the bleeding stopped. Could I have taken care of my father by myself yesterday? Probably, but it was infinitely easier, calmer, and reassuring for both of us that there were a couple of good citizens who, as volunteers in their community, had taken the time and effort to get trained in first aid and genuinely had compassion and concern for a stranger in a moment of distress.

THAT’S what being the best you that you can be, for the sake of others, is. THAT’S what citizenship looks like. And now, as an adult who is no longer bound by law to an education system, that’s what you need to be. Society doesn’t need anymore jaded misanthropes who feel that the only reason they should work and be productive is just to get theirs; we have plenty of people like that already. Whatever you are, be a good one, no matter what it is...for the good of all of us.

Good luck and God bless you, kid. It's a scary, cutthroat world you're about to step into. But it doesn't have to be. Make it a little better.

Yeah, I did go back to the local no-longer-just-a-community-college-because-it-has-15,000-students-from-dozens-of-countries and took (and passed) English 1101. I could probably manage two, maybe three classes at a time, but I could definitely tell that it was a bit overwhelming as it was.

So I’m just gonna stick with my new job until I pay off my current loans, and I’ll see if I can figure things out by then. Ideally, I hope to go back full-time and finish before I’m 30. That gives me a bit over 4 years to get back into it, so I think I’ll be fine.

I only took 12-13 hours every semester, anytime I tired to take more I dropped the extra class. I may have wasted some of my parents money, but I graduated and that’s all that mattered at the end of the day. I still don’t think I’m grateful enough that I graduated with $0 in student loans.

Sounds like you’ve got somewhat of a plan, hopefully you’ll be able to do it. One of my chemical engineering friends was 34 when he graduated, so there’s nothing wrong with going back to school later if something else comes up. There’s also nothing wrong with not going to college, it’s not for everyone.
